Visit The Temple Of The Scared Tooth Relic



  • The tooth, which was originally buried in several temples around the island, was brought to Ceylon in the 4th century.
  • The golden casket is encrusted with seven precious stones and is mounted on an elephant in the annual procession.
  • Due to the absence of a king during the British rule, the guardianship of Dalada was entrusted to Buddhist monks.
  • Religious services, poojas, are held daily at dawn, midday and in the evening and can be viewed by visitors. The services are accompanied with traditional music and drumming.
  • The entire temple complex is built in upland classical architecture.
